    Touching article, RIP Abigail.
  • Indigo64 - Tuesday, July 30, 2013 - link

I am actually very familiar with Gary's posts, and have always appreciated the insights. When I was 16 (and to date myself, that was 2 years before Anandtech was founded) I lost someone very close to me in similar circumstances, she was the same age as Abby. Anand's post here resonated on that old nerve once again, and I remember the pain vividly. I hope you continue to be strong through all of this Gary (and family), and I will still be here to keep reading your reviews and writeups for as long as you keep posting them on AT. Thanks for everything you've done, and I hope you can find the peace you need and deserve. I am so sorry for your loss. (P.S. Thx for the heads up Anand)

What ever can go wrong - will go wrong; Murphy's Law (src: Wikipedia). It could be your daughter or mine or in this case it was Gary's daughter. Its a common evil that we must defeat; Make the roads safer. Google Cars are a very important step in that direction. I hope in the near future computers that do not get drunk and can 'think' at near light speeds and talk to each-other with absolute precision can help us be safe.
She has left us - it is more sad for the world for what it has lost and for the many lives she'd have touched. My condolences - Ujjwal Singh

My condolences to Gary and his family...

I took a few minutes to reminisce on some older articles that Gary wrote on slot-1 boards, DFI NF2 lan-party, and his Conroe MB roundup. He was a great writer, and I wanted to say I appreciated all his awesome work back in the day. He was writing when I started reading AT regularly (~2002) and was an awesome contributor.

Again, condolences to Gary and his family in such a difficult time. Know that the whole AT community (even though we can get unruly at times..) supports him 100%.

My deepest condolences. She sounds like she was a wonderful person with all the potential in the world. Our 16 year old grandson has just spent the summer with us, and he is a very kind and caring person too. I cant imagine how we would handle the loss if something happened to him. I admire you for dealing with the loss and hope you somehow can heal, although I am sure you will always feel the loss.

Gary was both patient and helpful with me in the past. No tragedy should ever strike someone like this, but it's doubly unfortunate that it should land on someone so undeserving of it. As a father and colleague, Gary, my every condolence goes out to you and your family, and I deeply hope you are able to heal as time allows.

I remember corresponding with Gary a fair amount via email and PM's here back in the early 2000's. A tragedy like this is certainly underserved and I wish I had an undo button for it. My condolences to Gary and family.

  • goinginstyle - Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - link

I cannot even imagine what Gary and his family is going through right now. There are no words to even describe the loss of a child this early in life. Gary always helped me while he was at AT, no matter what dumb question I asked or situation I got myself into with a variety of PCs. He even sent me a replacement X58 motherboard, no questions asked although I had screwed up the CPU installation. I am sure Abigail was just as giving to others based on what I read today.

Gary did great work here, and because I always by Asus products he must be continuing his level of excellence. I had a friend die in a car crash at 16. It changed the lives of those around her. It was the first time I saw death affect my life and since then I've lost even closer people. There are no words to describe the individual loss Gary has suffered. I hope that those closest to him in all areas of his life give their support. I know never would have made it though my losses without the understanding and care given to me. To other AnandTech readers, if you see others suffering from loss like death or divorce make sure to lend an ear and a helping hand.

Hi, Gary and Gary's family and friends. I know it's weird and possibly unexpected for a stranger to wish you condolences. But, a family, even if virtual, is something. She sounded like a wonderful and exciting young woman. I wish you all calm days of peace in your time ahead.

Your articles, by the way, were wonderful. When I was building my first ever computer, I read your glowing review of the ASUS P5N-E SLI (650i SLI chipset) and ended up using it for my PC. It's still going strong, 6 years later. :) Thank you for passion and detailed writing--it was appreciated.

May she rest in peace and all of you be able to live fulfilling, complete, and extraordinary lives.

    From your virtual family member,

    ~Ibrahim~

Oh thanks for posting about this. What a horrible loss. It should not be borne alone. My kids are the most phenomenal people in my life. The only solace I could possibly offer is the sure knowledge that Abigail made the world a better place, because of the lives she touched while she was here. For all time, a better place, and that cannot be taken away.
  • TheBeagle - Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - link

A number of years ago I met Gary Key on the Forums here on AnandTech. From the very first time we exchanged comments and views about a number of computer issues, I realized he was an OK kind of a guy and always willing to help someone with a computer related problem.

After a while, I also got to know a little bit about Gary's family, especially Abigail, who had been then recently diagnosed with a probable serious health issue. That's when I really got to appreciate Gary's qualities as both a man and a father. My heart breaks to read about the tragic loss of Abigail - she was truly the apple of her daddy's eye.

My faith allows me to know that Abigail is now with the angels. Blessings on Gary and his whole family, now and in the future. With deepest respect, TheBeagle

Very long-time reader of Anandtech, and of course I remember Gary's insight. Please accept my deepest condolences. No parent should ever use a child.

However I'd like to offer some personal advice too. At the time of a very similar incident (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6219254.... I was dating Charlie Green's sister and very close to the family. Ivan Mazour is the son of a Russian oligarch, so as you can imagine getting a member of the '1%' put in prison was quite a stressful court case above and beyond the loss of Charlie. The Greens needed as much strength as possible, and they did get at least light vindication in Mazour's conviction. I lived with them throughout the whole episode and as I'd known Charlie for years prior it was a loss to me as well.

Nevertheless, the advice I would strongly recommend is after the initial shock has died down, the Key's will need distraction. This may seem counter intuitive, but it is vitally important to focus on something other than Abigail and the massive void in their lives, otherwise a loss of this magnitude can easily consume even the strongest of hearts.

As Gary has a history in AnandTech, may I suggest, Anand, that you are quite insistent with Gary to start reviewing again (even though he won't feel up to it at all) to focus himself on doing a couple of time consuming reviews again as this should be a suitable distraction. Please trust me from experience - in doing this, you will be doing him a massive favour.

Gary and Key Family: I am very sorry for your loss, and from the article I think it is our loss, the worlds loss, to lose such a smart and motivated person as Abigail.
  • Unclean - Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - link

I'm so very sorry to hear about this. It's so horrible when someone young goes far before their time...but it seems like she was a smart and amazing young lady. She won't be forgot by the people she had in her life and by her family it seems. The loss of a child is a pain I hope I never ever have to face. I lost my best friend Andy when I was 25 and he was only 20, he was a professional drummer and by far the best person I have ever known in my life. I wouldn't be the person I am today without having had his friendship and his faith in me in my life. I have his drumset (Pearl Master kit with a rack and sooo many cymbals!) and I'm reminded of him every time I see them at my house, even though I cannot play a single thing! But my dad told me something I think about every day "Don't try and make sense of this Scott, there's nothing to make sense of and loss like this just takes time to even begin to heal."

My deepest condolences Mr. Key and to your family and her friends and loved ones. Also to Chance Clifton's friends and family. A terrible loss for all.

My deepest condolence to Gary Key and everyone who loved and had been loved by this wonderful girl.
From the accident report, this tragedy was not caused by anyone's action. Someone's lack of diligence triggered the event at an unlucky moment, and fate forgot to look after this wonderful girl.
I wish everyone impacted by this tragedy will remember the best moment of Abby, and live a fuller life. I am sure that is what Abby would wish for those who she had loved.

    Gary,

I can't say I know what it's like to lose a child...most of us geeks don't think we'll ever be lucky enough to start a family.

But what I can say, is that the AT community is a tight one, and that we all care. There's no doubt in my mind that although we often argue while sitting our fanboy benches, we'd all lend a hand to each other, the moment it's asked for. You've help to create to cinditions for such a community to grow, and grow close, so now's the time to take advantahe of what you helped create.

I'm very, very, sorry for your loss. Just know that if we can help in any way, all you need to do is ask. If you decide to start a scholarship--if you need help with, or would like to help the other children or their families with medical bills, or with other costs-- or hold an event for the kids at her high school, there are probably a ton of us that would be extremely proud to donate something to such a cause.

I wish I could say something a bit more personal...more moving. We've all enjoyed a ton of your work, so we all feel like we know you, and I hope that we can all share some of your burden, even if it's just a tiny bit.

So sorry to hear this, I can't imagine what it would be like to lose my daughter. I remember reading Gary's work, he even helped me with a question I had on some memory/memory controller issues. I pray the family will be able to find peace in this time of tragedy.
